Daily Kakuro
Daily Kakuro is a free number crossword where every run adds up to its clue without repeating digits. A new puzzle arrives every day at 00:00 UTC, and practice mode features unlimited puzzles.
Daily Kakuro is a free number puzzle, sometimes called Cross Sums. It looks like a crossword, but every answer is a sum. The number in a dark square is the total of the white squares to its right or below it. Fill each white square with a digit from 1 to 9 so every run adds up to its clue, without repeating a digit inside a run. Every puzzle has exactly one answer and can be solved by logic alone. A new puzzle appears every day at 00:00 UTC, the same for every player, and practice mode has unlimited small, medium and large puzzles. It is great practice for addition and number sense.
How to play
- A clue in the top-right of a dark square is the sum of the run to its right. A clue in the bottom-left is the sum of the run below it.
- Tap a white square, then tap a digit. Each run must add up to its clue and cannot use the same digit twice.
- Use Notes to pencil in possible digits. Repeated digits turn red, and a clue turns grey when its run is complete.
- Fill every square correctly to solve the puzzle. Try to beat your best time.
Tips and strategy
- Learn the forced sums. Two squares adding to 3 must be 1 and 2, and two squares adding to 17 must be 8 and 9.
- Three squares adding to 6 are always 1, 2 and 3, and three squares adding to 24 are always 7, 8 and 9.
- Look where an across run and a down run cross. The square must hold a digit both runs allow, which often leaves only one choice.
- Use Notes to write the possible digits in tight spots, then cross them off as neighboring squares fill in.
- When a run has one empty square left, its digit is simply the clue minus the digits already placed.
Questions
What is Kakuro?
Kakuro is a logic puzzle that mixes a crossword with addition. It first appeared in American puzzle magazines as Cross Sums, and the Japanese publisher Nikoli gave it the name Kakuro.
Do I need to be good at math?
Only addition with digits 1 to 9. The challenge is logic: working out which combinations fit where runs cross.
Is there only one answer?
Yes. Every puzzle is checked by a solver that uses step-by-step logic, so there is exactly one answer and you never have to guess.
What does the line under the grid mean?
It shows the runs through the selected square, for example "Across 17 in 2" for a two-square run that adds up to 17.
When does the daily puzzle change?
Every day at 00:00 UTC. Your progress, time and streak are saved in your browser.
